    Description

    You’re probably looking at this because your Minn Kota Power Drive isn’t working right – my Left Turn stopped working – ever try to reach the dock by making ONLY right turns??? Other people I’ve talked to – their speed control stopped working.
    The first version of Minn Kota’s Power Drive foot pedal was made in 1991 – Minn Kota stopped making them and making replacement parts. It was a poor design so even if you buy a used one – eventually that will fail also!
    I got fed up with only making right hand turns and took the pin outs and converted them to reliable switches and installed them in a small project box. I’m selling them to help out my fellow fishermen whose trolling motor is still good but their foot pedal has let them down.
    This is a proven design that I’ve been using for over two years. I’ve chosen to use a common widely available connector from the computer industry known as a ‘DB9’. There are 7 wires in the foot control, the DB9 has 9 pins and therefore can support up to 9 wires, so there’s 2 pins not used. I use the same colored wires as the Minn Kota so you’ll never get confused. The switches are commonly available so if one goes bad you can easily replace it yourself.
    This control box comes with a 10”’ long pig tail with a female DB9 on the end. The DB9 is what I have used for my connector and it is how I test the controllers that I build.
    This ONLY helps if your foot pedal control has gone bad, there's the main motor, the motor that moves the 'collar' to steer the head, and the PC board that can go bad...

    If you choose the DB9 option you need to be good at soldering or have a friend that’s good at soldering. I’ll include the Male DB9, the hood, and a list of what color wire goes to which pin on the DB9 – you supply the solder and soldering skill.
    You can also choose to cut off the DB9 and solder the two sets of wires together – this is a very secure option. I’d suggest using heat shrink tubing for each connection and a larger piece of heat shrink tubing for covering them all.
    You could use crimp style wire connectors (instead of soldering) but it’s messy and not recommended.
    Another option is to disassemble your foot pedal and solder the control box wires to where the wires meet the pedal’s PC board
    If your Minn Kota Power Drive Connector is oval/flat – then it is a version 1 and will work with this Control Box (version 2 Power Drive connector is round – I can’t verify if it will work with the Control box) My foot pedal has a part number (on the bottom) of 230-451 – but the shape of the cable connector is the most important factor.
    Each Control box is tested on my Minn Kota Power Drive Motor before shipping.
    The Directional switch
    is pretty self-explanatory push the switch to the left the motor turns left, push the switch to the right, the motor turns right – the resting position for this switch is Center/Off directional power is applied as long as the switch is held off-center. On your foot pedal this would be the equivalent to applying Left or Right pressure on the foot pedal.
    Lower Left switch
    is the momentary power switch – this supplies power to the motor, its resting position is OFF it will supply the motor with power for as long as you hold the button on. This switch is typically used for positioning the boat. You’d typically use the directional switch to point the motor in the direction you want the boat to move then give the momentary switch a push to nudge the boat in the direction you want. On your foot pedal this would be the equivalent to stepping on bottom of the pedal – the motor goes for as long as you apply pressure to the foot pedal.
    Lower Right switch
    is Power On/Off – its resting position is either On or Off. When you are not using your motor it should always be in the Off position. When you’re trolling or want the boat constantly moving – you switch this to On. On your foot pedal this would be the equivalent to the switch on the lower right.
    Power adjusting knob
    . The two power switches determine if power is going to the motor. This adjustor determines how much power (how fast do you want to go) to the motor. Clockwise is more power, counter clockwise is less power. Note this does NOT stop all electricity going to the motor. While the motor may stop moving when turned counter clockwise all the way – electricity is still flowing if the lower right switch is in the On position – your battery will eventually drain (don’t ask me how I know). I always disconnect the power to the motor when I done for that day. On your foot pedal this would be the equivalent to the slide adjuster along the right side of your foot pedal.
