    Coin History
Introduced the year after the identically named large Cent, the Classic Half Cent was designed by John Reich.  Production of this type was steady only through 1811, after which no more Half Cents were struck for several years because the Mint's supply of copper planchets became exhausted and the War of 1812 prevented the federal government from obtaining additional shipments from its suppliers in Great Britain.  When mintage finally resumed in 1825, demand for the denomination remained low enough that it was halted once again in 1829.  (The Half Cent had been steadily declining in popularity and usefulness since it was first struck in 1793.)  One final order from the merchant Washington Cilley necessitated the preparation of a slightly refined design and the production of limited numbers of business strikes from 1831-1835.  The only 1836-dated Half Cents struck in the Philadelphia Mint are proofs, and the onset of the Hard Times the following year sounded the death knell of the Classic Half Cent series.  When the United States Mint elected to strike limited numbers of proofs for collectors beginning in 1840, it adopted the new Braided Hair design prepared by Christian Gobrecht.
The rarest issue in the Classic Half Cent series is the 1831.  Long thought to be a proof-only delivery, business strikes (2,200 pieces produced) have been confirmed, yet remain exceedingly rare in numismatic circles.  With a limited delivery of 63,140 pieces, the 1811 can also be difficult to locate in today's market.
